Working as a team member, the main purpose of the job is to provide support to the Advanced Technology Manager in planning, organising and conducting professional future wireless / mobile communication technology engineering research for wireless mobile platforms for User Equipment (UE). This will be conducted to explore and secure intellectual property in technology areas relevant to the mobile communications field focused on wireless mobile user equipment technologies. The jobholder will also assist in directing and reviewing work undertaken in collaboration with academic and industrial partners and joint projects.

Candidate Profile

Under the guidance of the Advanced Technology Manager, the jobholder is expected to perform (but is not limited to) the following tasks,

Conduct research in areas related to essential areas of future wireless / mobile communication technology focused on User Equipment (UE) mobile platforms. Where relevant the full mobile network should be taken in to account. This may include some of the following activities

· Derive and analyse possible future software and hardware architectures.
· Derive and analyse mathematical and / or simulation models of parts of future mobile telecommunication systems
· Building software or hardware models or experiments to evaluate new ideas
· Collate information from wide and varied sources in relevant fields and future mobile telecommunications research
· Analyse relevant research from other sources.
· The jobholder is expected to be able to conduct their assigned research or other tasks on a day-to-day basis without direct supervision.
· Assist in directing and reviewing work undertaken in collaboration with universities and industrial partners. This may include some of the activities listed in item Error! Reference source not found. above
· Help establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other internal/external parties interested or involved in these activities.
· Participate in and make presentations at conferences and meetings for future wireless / mobile communication technology research and development.
· Keep up-to-date with wireless / mobile systems technology developments and trends.
· Create and help create essential intellectual property in wireless / mobile technology areas with a focus on User Equipment and mobile platform technology.
· Give technical support to the SERI Standards Group as agreed with the Advanced Technology Manager.
· Develop new methods and processes as and when required with the agreement of the Advanced Technology Manager.
· Provide guidance to engineering staff and other researchers as required.
· Prepare timely reports of research findings.
· Establish and maintain a library of records and findings accessible to others involved in the group’s activities.

Skills and experience

· Educated to PhD level in telecommunications, electronics engineering or computer science disciplines.
· At least 2 years post doctorate work experience or sponsorship in telecommunications, electronic engineering or computer science subjects.
· Expert knowledge in mobile phone technology user equipment with knowledge of mobile systems, software or intellectual property is preferable.
· Knowledge of research methods and techniques and methods of collecting and analysing data is essential.
· Ability to analyse information and prepare reports whilst applying engineering principals to research projects is essential.
· Good interpersonal and IT skills are essential
