description: This well established company based in Buckinghamshire, is the leading supplier of Java virtual machine technology, providing accelerated Java solutions for Internet appliances and embedded devices, a market which is set for rapid expansion over the next few years.

They seek a Software Development Engineer to join their R & D Group.

You will need to be degree qualified in Science or an Engineering discipline, computer-related preferred with at least 10 years experience.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE -
Comprehensive experience in a diverse range of fields, previously having worked with customers and senior management to present an overview of technical solutions. Experience in producing technical studies and an ability to apply detailed technical knowledge to a wide range of subjects including complex design issues, complex programming issues etc.

Experience of embedded systems and real-time operating systems is desirable, especially an understanding of issues of threads, exception handling, memory management, resource management, determinism and predictability. Familiarity with the internals of any operating system is useful. Experience of implementing an operating system would be valuable.

AND/OR

Experience of compiler development or a knowledge of compiler internals would be highly advantageous. Of particular interest is a knowledge of optimisation techniques, code generation for RISC processors, and Just-In-Time compilers. At the very least, a desire to learn about these things is essential!

PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES -
Very strong C is essential - They do all their development in C with some assembly language. They also use some PERL to write tools for internal use.

MICROPROCESSORS –
Familiarity with x86 or any RISC or embedded processors is useful, e.g. ARM, MIPS, PowerPC,
or Hitachi SH.
JAVA -
Although there is limited Java development, a working knowledge of Java and how it is implemented is required e.g Java virtual machines, Java bytecode, just-in-time compilers, garbage collection.

OPERATING SYSTEMS -
They develop on both Windows and Linux. Their products run on a variety of OSes including Windows CE and real-time operating systems such as VxWorks and ITRON.
OTHER -
A working knowledge of the GNU tools would be an advantage.
